As a dietician, proper hydration is one of the first things I look at when working with a client. When we think about hydration, water immediately comes to mind. But being hydrated is not as simple as just drinking a ton of water. To stay properly hydrated, you need to consume adequate electrolytes - they help your nerve impulses fire, regulate fluid balance, help produce energy, and support strong bones.

One article in the Journal of Sport Science reported:
“Vigorous exercise and warm/hot weather induce sweat production, which contains both water and electrolytes. Daily water (4-10 L) and sodium (3500-7000 mg) losses in active athletes during hot weather exposure can induce water and electrolyte deficits…”
When you’re physically active and sweat, replacing lost sodium is essential to feel and perform your best. But many athletes forget about sodium and drink more water when they feel dehydrated - the more common problem for these folks is drinking too much water, not too little. Overwatering dilutes blood sodium levels, causing a dangerous condition called hyponatremia - which can lead to headaches, muscle cramps, and fatigue.
This deficiency increases even more when you follow a low-carb diet - reduced carb intake means no processed foods, which make up 70% of our dietary sodium intake. When you cut these out of the equation, you are likely not getting enough sodium. To add insult to injury, your kidneys excrete even more sodium when your carb intake is low. This is why those with a low-carb lifestyle often complain of unpleasant symptoms like headaches, muscle cramps, and fatigue. To feel our best, we need to pay attention to electrolyte and mineral intake - and our needs increase even more when we sweat or follow a low-carb diet.
We developed LMNT because we were frustrated with a lack of healthy options on the market.Robb Wolf, Co-Founder of LMNT
Hydration is one of my main priorities first thing when I wake up in the morning - and that means consuming both water and electrolytes. Most people don’t realize that having the right mix of sodium, potassium, and magnesium is as important as the food you eat. This is especially true if you’re new to a lower carb diet, an athlete, or going through a stressful period in your life.

For extra electrolytes, I’m a huge fan of LMNT Recharge. It was created by my good friend Robb Wolf and his coaches to provide a tasty electrolyte drink with no sugar or other questionable ingredients commonly found in traditional sports drinks. I drink two packets every day in my water - one of each of my two favorite flavors: Raspberry Salt and Orange Salt. I also recommend it to all of my nutrition clients - it’s been a game changer in how they feel mentally and physically.
I love that LMNT is zero-sugar because it’s great for my whole family. My kids drink it on days they have sports or if they’ve been out playing with friends in the hot sun. As a mom, LMNT is a win-win for me - my kids are getting the electrolytes they need without putting any sugar or other harmful junk into their bodies. Plus, they can’t seem to get enough of all of the delicious flavors!
