Why do low-carbers need so much sodium? 

  • When you are on a low-carb diet, your insulin levels decrease.
  • When your insulin levels decrease, your body produces less aldosterone.
  • Since aldosterone helps you retain sodium, its depletion results in a loss of sodium at a rapid rate.

And if you’re eating a diet mostly of whole foods, you’re likely not consuming much sodium. According to the FDA, over 70% of sodium in American diets comes from processed foods.

This chain of events creates the perfect storm of keto flu symptoms and is the #1 most common mistake for those new to a low-carb or ketogenic diet.

When I first adopted a ketogenic diet 20 years ago, I didn’t take electrolyte supplementation seriously and I suffered for it. The keto flu held me back from doing what I truly enjoy - being a dad to Zoe and Sagan, being a husband to Nicki, and growing as a BJJ athlete.

When I finally listened to my coaches and dialed in my electrolytes, I felt the benefits immediately. I was sleeping better, my brain was functioning on new levels, and I had more energy on the BJJ mat.
