One article in the Journal of Sports Science reported:
“Vigorous exercise and warm/hot weather induce sweat production, which contains both water and electrolytes. Daily water (4-10 L) and sodium (3500-7000 mg) losses in active athletes during hot weather exposure can induce water and electrolyte deficits…”
When you're physically active and sweat, replacing lost sodium is essential to feel and perform your best. And if you're eating a diet mostly of whole foods, you are likely not consuming much sodium. According to the FDA, over 70% of sodium in American diets comes from processed foods.
I'm not recommending we consume processed foods, but we do need to pay as much attention to electrolyte and mineral intake - in particular sodium - as we do our food for optimal performance -and our needs increase when we sweat, follow a low-carb diet, or fast.
