Why do you need so much sodium on whole30?

Why are electrolytes so important?

  1. It's more common for those on a Whole30 to be eating too little sodium than too much.
  2. On Whole30, you're not eating many processed foods and zero fast foods (which tend to be high in sodium).
  3. On a low-carb diet, you lose sodium at a rapid rate, which can lead to symptoms like headaches, light-headedness, low energy, muscle cramps, and insomnia.

If you’re taking a Whole30-ish approach in your food freedom or eating a Paleo, Primal, low-carb, or keto diet, I highly recommend you pay attention to your sodium intake, and don’t assume less is better!

How I stay hydrated

There aren't many supplements I'm religious about taking, but LMNT electrolytes are one of them. I'm active (especially in the summer), and because of my whole food-based diet, I've found my sodium needs are higher than what I can get from just salting my food.

I've been adding one packet of LMNT to my gym water bottle and hiking hydration pack for more than a year, and have noticed improvement in energy both on and off the trail. (Plus, I no longer get leg cramps after a long hike.)

Everything you need, nothing you don't

We developed LMNT Recharge because we were frustrated with the lack of healthful electrolyte products on the market. We were fielding questions daily from people in our communities struggling to get adequate electrolytes, but could not recommend anything on the market.

The hard truth is that available electrolyte products are high in sugar and woefully lacking in actual electrolytes. Based on the latest nutritional science, getting adequate electrolytes through these products equates to over 100 grams of added sugar per day. We don’t think anyone needs this amount of sugar.

For years our recommended solution was to buy electrolytes in bulk and make your own electrolyte home-brews. After spending too many hours meticulously measuring and mixing our own electrolyte homebrews and getting stopped by airport security one too many times for carrying dozens of baggies full of white powder, LMNT Recharge was born.
