I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 16. I left that doctor's visit with three prescriptions and a diagnosis that said I would not ever be able to have my own kids. The doctors told me that this condition was simply the cards that I was dealt in this life; there was nothing I could have done differently. But the scientific literature says otherwise. It became increasingly clear that cutting excess carbs, sugar, and caffeine out of my diet could save my health. I needed to make a change – and quickly. So, I adopted the keto lifestyle.
This dietary change asked that I look at hydration differently, too. A keto diet creates water loss and electrolyte loss. When water is exiting the body, so are electrolytes. If you are feeling foggy or low energy on the first days of your low-carb journey, you need to start adding electrolytes back into your body.
Did you know that a fast food milkshake contains more sodium than a french fry? People don’t realize that there is sodium in all sorts of processed foods. Not just the ones we think of as salty in flavor. So, when you’re no longer eating those foods on a keto or low-carb diet, it becomes essential to supplement your electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) – and crucial to find an electrolyte mix that isn’t loaded with sugar.
We developed LMNT because we were frustrated with a lack of healthy options on the market.Robb Wolf, Co-Founder of LMNT
I learned the importance of replacing lost sodium the hard way. Over the years I found that a low-carb lifestyle did wonders for my health, but I felt depleted when pursuing my passion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
When I brought up my problem to my coaches, Tyler and Luis, they simultaneously answered that I needed more electrolytes. And over the years, I’ve helped thousands of folks overcome the same issue in my community.
When you switch to a ketogenic diet, you are not simply limiting sugar and carbohydrates. You are also adapting to a nutrient-rich diet that consists mostly of whole foods. And while you replace your kitchen cabinet with nourishing ingredients, your body gets to work adapting to this lifestyle, too.
When becoming keto-adapted, your kidneys release much of the salt and associated water they hold onto with high-carb diets. If you don’t add more electrolytes back into your body, you risk becoming dehydrated or experiencing ‘keto flu’ symptoms: low energy, imbalanced mood, headaches, or foggy mental clarity.
Eliminating packaged and processed foods from your diet cuts out more sodium than most of my clients realize at first. But when you are adapting to all these other dietary changes, balancing your sodium, magnesium and potassium levels can be an overwhelming and meticulous task. That’s why I love LMNT. This portable hydration mix makes it effortless to add the electrolytes you need back in.
The LMNT formulation skips sugar, food dye, and all that ‘dodgy’ stuff that was hurting my health and slowing my kids down. I love that it boosts our energy and keeps us hydrated when we are sweating and working out together as a family. I even add it to some of our favorite ‘sugar free’ recipes – from hydrating popsicles to energy-boosting gummies. My kids love it in every form. They drink it like it’s going out of style.
