The #1 Reason Keto “Doesn’t Work” For You

Are you new to keto? Or have you tried keto and experienced symptoms like muscle cramps, headaches, brain fog, dizziness, or fatigue? Then this article is for you.

In the decades that I’ve been educating on how to achieve success on a low-carb diet, the keto flu is undoubtedly the #1 reason folks “fail” on keto. And while the keto flu is very easy to overlook, it is just as easy to prevent.

Keto Flu Symptoms

  • Muscle Cramps
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Dietary Cravings

WHAT CAUSES THE KETO FLU?

The ketogenic diet is diuretic in nature - meaning that your body excretes electrolytes at an increased rate. While the keto flu is the body’s natural reaction to a ketogenic diet, suffering from it is not a forgone conclusion. You can mitigate, or even wholly avoid, the keto flu by listening to the advice my coaches gave me: “You need more electrolytes - ESPECIALLY SALT.”
  • Decreased Carb Intake
  • Lower Insulin Levels
  • Diuresis
  • Electrolyte Deficiency
  • Keto Flu

THE TAKEAWAY

You need to pay as much attention to your electrolytes as you do your food.

How to Avoid the
Keto Flu

Fortunately, the keto flu can be reduced within 15-30 minutes of properly replacing electrolytes. In general, you should be consuming electrolytes at the levels below. It’s worth noting that these are generic ranges and that your exact level of optimal electrolyte intake will be affected by things like age, body mass, daily activity, and hot weather. If you can relate to any of the symptoms above, there is a good chance your electrolytes are out of balance.

  • 5000-7000 mg
    Sodium
  • 1000-3500 mg
    Potassium
  • 300-500 mg
    Magnesium

  • How long will it take to start seeing results?

Electrolyte imbalances can make one feel awful in a very short time. This can manifest as headaches, muscle cramps, sleep disturbances, and generally feeling terrible. In low-carb or ketogenic circles, this is commonly referred to as the “low-carb flu” or “keto flu.” Properly addressing electrolyte needs can fix these problems just as rapidly.

  • How many servings should I take per day?

Mix 1 stick pack with 16 oz of water (or more, depending on preference) up to 3 times per day.

  • Is LMNT Recharge only for people on a low-carb or keto diet?

No, we created LMNT to provide the best electrolyte drink mix ever. While our product is naturally low-carb and keto friendly, LMNT ReCharge is formulated to anyone can meet their electrolyte needs without adding unhealthy ingredients to their diet.

  • Can I make this at home?

Yes, that’s what I did for years! Grab a copy of our electrolyte homebrew recipe guide here.

  • 1000mg of Sodium per serving!? Will taking this cause high blood pressure?

The latest scientific literature shows that too little sodium consumption is far more dangerous than too much. In fact, for the vast majority of people, sodium intake has little influence on blood pressure.

Recent research paints sodium intake and health in what is called a “U” curve. Health problems arise with too little and too much sodium consumption. But if you look at this graph, you will notice, that the “too little” is a steep curve, while “too much” is flat. What this means is it is easy to get in trouble with too little, and pretty hard to get too much.

It’s worth mentioning that the optimum level is nearly 2x higher than current medical recommendations!

  • Why does LMNT contain magnesium malate instead of magnesium citrate?

Magnesium plays a remarkable number of key functions in the body, but the key point here is “in the body.” If the magnesium is not absorbed it functions as a laxative. Magnesium malate is far more bioavailable than magnesium citrate (which is technically categorized as a laxative), so if you are looking for a supplement to actually improve the levels of magnesium IN your body, go with a malate form. If you are looking for a case of “disaster pants,” seek out other options.

Research on the Bioavailability of Magnesium Compounds

Malic acid is an important Krebs cycle intermediate, buffers lactic acid, and appears to have nootropic properties. These characteristics combined with the superior absorption of magnesium malate make this the obvious choice for a smart electrolyte formula.

  • Why did you not include calcium?

In general, people are getting too little magnesium, not calcium. Calcium is a vital nutrient, but the scientific literature has painted a picture that magnesium is the more important of the two divalent metal ions.

The ratio/requirement of ~2:1 in terms of magnesium to calcium, but most people eating dairy, dark green veggies, almonds, sardines, etc. are getting all the calcium they need but would benefit from more magnesium.

Perhaps more importantly, the bulk of the scientific literature looking at calcium supplementation has shown little in the way of benefits (unlike magnesium) and a worrying increase in cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke.

Our goal at Elemental Labs is to help you improve your performance, health, and longevity, and calcium supplementation is (in our opinion) not consistent with that mission.

  • What do I do with the Raw Unflavored version?

You can mix this using your own sweeteners (recipes here) or you can make a savory beverage by adding a stick to your bone broth, pre-workout drink, or protein shake.

One thing NOT to do with the Raw Unflavored version is empty several packets into a small sandwich bag, and try to carry this package through airport security. (Trust me on this one…)

  • Does the product contain iodine?

No, there is no iodine in the product. This is particularly important for those in our community using medications to regulate thyroid function, as iodine may have harmful effects for these folks.
